Poolin Bankruptcy Exposes Widespread Financial Strain in Bitcoin Mining
Poolin Technology, once one of the largest Bitcoin mining pools in the world, has filed for bankruptcy in New Jersey. The company's Chapter 11 petition lists liabilities between $100 million and $500 million against assets valued at only $1 million to $10 million. This is not the first time Poolin has struggled with its finances, as it faced a liquidity crisis in 2022.
The bankruptcy filing follows years of financial warning signs, which culminated in a significant shortfall. In response to liquidity problems and a surge in withdrawal requests, Poolin issued IOU tokens representing users' balances at a 1:1 ratio in September 2022. The company has since halted flash trades, internal transfers, and certain swap services through its wallet.
The asset sale timeline is as follows: qualified bids for the debtors' assets are due by Sept. 8, with an auction scheduled for Sept. 10 if competing qualified bids come in. A hearing on the proposed sale is set for Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. ET before Judge Eamonn J. O'Hagan.
