Portuguese Man Sentenced to Seven Years for Stealing Over $1 Million in Cryptocurrency

Share

A Portuguese man, Ruben Filipe Gabriel Martins, was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for stealing over $1 million in cryptocurrency from unsuspecting victims. Martins pleaded guilty last year to wire fraud and identity theft charges after using sophisticated phishing tactics to obtain his victims' account information.

The scheme began when Martins pretended to be a customer support representative for Coinbase, convincing his victims that he could help them with their compromised accounts. He then transferred the stolen funds into other cryptocurrencies before spending the ill-gotten gains on luxury goods and traveling.

Martins was associated with an international cybercrime network called 'the Com,' which used technology to commit various crimes worldwide, including extortion, theft, and incitements of violence.
