Price Optimism Drives Crypto Ownership, Study Finds
A new study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland has found that Americans hold cryptocurrency due to their expectation of price surges, rather than anonymous transfers. According to the study, crypto holders tend to be younger, male, and more libertarian than non-holders, with stronger expectations for future performance.
The research compared how crypto holders view the asset versus how non-holders see it, highlighting distinct expectations about returns and risk. The study found that factors such as income and education explain who invests in stocks, but cryptocurrency ownership is driven by expectations of strong future performance.
When participants were shown historical cryptocurrency returns in an information experiment, they increased their desired crypto holdings and actual purchases by 23%. This supports the finding that perceptions are central to household crypto investment decisions.
