ProCap Boosts Shareholders' BTC Exposure with Unconventional Buyback Strategy
ProCap Financial, a Nasdaq-listed company, has adopted an unusual strategy to boost its shareholders' exposure to Bitcoin. The firm sold about 50 BTC and repurchased over 2% of its common stock in September, reducing its treasury holdings but increasing the value of remaining shares.
Shares traded roughly 40% below net asset value (NAV), making buybacks potentially increase each remaining investor's Bitcoin exposure despite a smaller treasury. The company's chairman and chief executive, Anthony Pompliano, said ProCap intends to continue repurchasing shares while they trade significantly below NAV.
The strategy reverses the usual approach used by Bitcoin treasury companies, which often issue stock when shares trade at a premium and use the proceeds to accumulate more Bitcoin. At September 2, ProCap calculated NAV at about $3.71 per share, while BRR closed at $2.31, a discount of roughly 38%.
ProCap used the same approach in June, selling about 52 BTC and repurchasing two million shares at an estimated 50% discount to NAV. The company still had $84.4 million remaining under its $100 million buyback authorization at June 30, though further purchases remain discretionary and depend on liquidity.
