Project Closures Peak Amid Institutional Blockchain Growth
Crypto project shutdowns have been on the rise in 2026, with at least 109 projects shutting down or winding down as of August 5. This number includes DeFi protocols, which accounted for 28 closures, making it the largest sector affected.
The tracker, built by CryptoSlate, assigns 99 records to projects marked shut down, six to projects winding down, and four to inactive products. Behind DeFi, gaming with 15 records and infrastructure with 13 were the next largest categories.
Notable high-profile examples of shutdowns include POAP, a project that had been running for over five years, and Zapper, a dashboard that was shut down in July. Centralized venues like BitMart also announced an orderly wind-down.
However, the data suggests a divergence between crypto project shutdowns and institutional blockchain growth. Banks and payment networks are processing real volume on controlled blockchain systems while extending or testing others.
