Proof of Play Winds Down Pirate Nation Classic
Pirate Nation is an on-chain pirate role-playing game developed by Proof of Play. Initially launched as a free-to-play RPG, it allowed players to form crews, design and build ships, explore the 'Infinite Isles,' harvest resources, and engage in card-based battles with game state recorded onchain.
The original version, now referred to as Pirate Nation Classic, has been discontinued due to a decline in player numbers from 100,000 daily active players at its peak to around 10,000. The studio cited the cost of maintaining both the game and its networks as a reason for the shutdown.
However, a smaller roguelite adaptation called Pirate Nation Arcade remains available on the Abstract chain. In this version, players select one of nine pirate captains, each with their unique vessel and starting deck, and battle successive enemy waves with persistent hull damage between battles.
The game's economy has been criticized for its entry cost, with players needing to purchase credits for additional attempts, which raises the score multiplier affecting leaderboard rankings. Despite this, weekly leaderboards distribute cash prizes, with early winners receiving unique founder rewards.
