Puebla Authorities Crack Down on Suspected Cryptocurrency Mining Operation
Authorities in Puebla, Mexico have discovered a facility suspected of illegal cryptocurrency mining. The site contains approximately 300 mining computing devices and other equipment including transformers, medium-voltage terminals, and satellite internet antennas.
The investigation focuses on the method of power connection rather than the mining itself, as evidence suggests that the facility operated through large-scale power connections near federal hydroelectric infrastructure.
Power theft is considered a crime in Mexico, even though cryptocurrency mining itself is not prohibited. Authorities are working with the Federal Electricity Commission to expand the investigation to nearby municipalities and determine whether the secured assets were used to give a legitimate appearance to funds from illegal activities.
