Pump.fun Blurs Line Between Memecoins and Traditional Markets
Pump.fun is expanding its offerings on Solana by allowing users to launch tokens paired directly with tokenized stocks, crypto majors, and metals. The platform has introduced 'Custom Pairs,' which enables anyone to create a token tied to these assets. The initial rollout supports 93 asset pairs through xStocks and Sunrise.
The list of available stock tokens includes Boeing, Alibaba, Costco, Dell, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Lockheed Martin, Reddit, Rivian, Shopify, and UPS, among others. These tokens are redeemable 1:1 for underlying shares and can be transferred to traditional brokerages.
Pump.fun's creator can now launch a token against assets such as NVDAx or TSLAx instead of using SOL or a stablecoin as the quote asset. Trading fees can also be paid out in the paired token, giving Pump.fun a direct economic incentive to increase trading around tokenized real-world assets.
However, not everyone is convinced that this model will endure. Decentralized finance commentator Ignas warned that stock-and-memecoin models built around fees become fragile once speculation cools. He pointed out that if volume dries up, payouts and buybacks disappear, weakening the incentive to hold such tokens.
