Pyth Network's API Overhaul Risks Freezing Unpatched Smart Contracts

Pyth Network's recent API overhaul has caused concern for DeFi protocols that rely on its price oracle services. The migration, which was due to be completed by August 26 at 16:00 UTC, required developers to update their authentication or configuration in order to continue accessing Pyth's Hermes price-delivery service.

However, the transition has caused issues for some developers who failed to comply with the changes, potentially putting unpatched smart contracts across approximately 316 DeFi protocols at risk of being frozen. These protocols represent around $2.7 billion in total value, according to a live DefiLlama oracle table.

The issue arises from mismatches between endpoint, SDK, and on-chain contract generation, which can block authenticated price updates and lead to the freezing of unpatched contracts. Pyth's Sui integrators were required to update both their client and on-chain Move package dependency in order to comply with the changes.

Fortunately, as of the post-deadline check, there was no confirmed outage or loss of funds reported. The immediate test was whether direct callers could authenticate and whether their endpoint, SDK, and on-chain contract generation matched.
