Quantum Breakthrough Could Bring Unseen Crypto Breaches
The arrival of quantum computers capable of breaking modern cryptography is becoming increasingly imminent. According to Christopher Smith, CEO and co-founder of blockchain startup Quantus Network, the first sign that a quantum computer has broken a cryptocurrency's security may not be a high-profile theft but rather a series of unexplained breaches. These could include unrelated crypto wallet hacks with no clear evidence of how an attacker gained access.
Smith explained that when a private key is derived from public keys exposed onchain, it doesn't necessarily mean there was an internal breach or compromise. The forensic evidence in such cases would be the absence of any signs of tampering, making 'Q-day', the hypothetical moment when quantum computers become powerful enough to break standard public-key cryptography, difficult to detect.
The first targets of a quantum computer may not necessarily be Satoshi Nakamoto's estimated $63 billion worth of Bitcoin, as some fear. Instead, military systems and state secrets could be more vulnerable to attack. Smith noted that an attacker could also target even more valuable keys, such as the minting key for Tether (USDT), which could allow them to create new tokens out of thin air and dump them on the market.
