Quantum Computer Limitation Theory Sparks Debate Over Bitcoin's Safety
Oxford physicist Tim Palmer has proposed a theory that quantum computers may have a physical limit to their growth, with entanglement eventually hitting a wall. This idea is not widely accepted in the field of quantum mechanics.
Palmer's paper, published in March in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), suggests that nature contains no smooth continuum, and that entanglement will eventually be limited by this fundamental property of reality.
The estimated limit to the growth of quantum computers is between 200 and 400 qubits, according to Palmer's research. This is significantly lower than the current estimates for cracking Bitcoin's signatures, which require at least 835 logical qubits using Shor's algorithm.
Elon Musk recently commented on Palmer's work, agreeing that the universe comes in fixed chunks, but his statement was taken out of context by some investors who claimed it as evidence that Bitcoin is already quantum-safe. However, it's essential to note that Musk was not discussing Bitcoin when he made this comment.
