Quantum Computers May Break Bitcoin by 2028-2029, Warns Tom Lee
Tom Lee, chairman of Bitmine (BMNR), has warned that quantum computers could potentially break Bitcoin's cryptographic defenses between 2028 and 2029. This warning is based on Google research indicating that modern computing advances could render Bitcoin's existing protection mechanisms obsolete.
Lee noted that the cryptocurrency community has yet to agree on a unified solution to address this looming threat. Quantum computing operates on fundamentally different principles than classical computers, using qubits to process information in ways that could potentially solve complex mathematical problems much faster.
Bitcoin relies on cryptographic algorithms like SHA-256 and ECDSA, which are currently considered secure against classical attacks. However, sufficiently powerful quantum computers could theoretically break these algorithms, allowing attackers to forge signatures or access funds.
Lee suggested that Ethereum and Solana are better protected against quantum risks, as both networks have shown more proactive approaches to future-proofing their protocols. However, neither network has fully implemented quantum-safe measures yet, and the industry as a whole is still in early stages of addressing these challenges.
