Quantum Computers Pose Threat to Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work Protocol
D-Wave CEO Alan Baratz has sounded an alarm about the potential threat of quantum computers to Bitcoin's proof-of-work protocol. Speaking in an interview, Baratz emphasized that advances in quantum computing could eventually compromise the security of Bitcoin mining.
Baratz believes it is 'clear' that sufficiently advanced quantum machines will outperform the hardware currently used for Bitcoin mining, although he declined to provide a specific timeframe for this eventuality. He noted that D-Wave has already developed a quantum proof-of-work protocol that relies on quantum optimization problems and could improve energy efficiency by a factor of about 1,000 compared to Bitcoin's current mining method.
The company's approach aims to maintain the competitive, decentralized nature of mining while providing greater resistance to sophisticated attacks. However, this proposal remains at an experimental stage and would likely face significant skepticism and resistance from developers and miners if implemented on a large scale.
