Quantum Computing Catalyst: Bitcoin Price Hike Looms as Developers Plan Road Map

Bitcoin's (BTC) price has been held back by investors' fears about quantum computing, according to Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments. He believes that a significant portion of the gap between Bitcoin's current price and its all-time high near $126,100 is due to this fear.

Edwards estimates that the fear discount due to quantum computing-related security vulnerabilities is around 30%. He expects the price to jump by at least 10% once Bitcoin's developers commit to a road map for fixing these issues.

The core problem facing Bitcoin is its reliance on encryption that can be cracked by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer. While no such computers exist today, they might in five or ten years, and if used to hack wallets and steal coins, it could trigger a historic sell-off.

To avoid this pitfall, developers need to plan for upgrading the chain's encryption scheme for new wallets while determining what to do with existing, potentially vulnerable ones. This includes dealing with Satoshi Nakamoto's stash of around 1.1 million Bitcoin, which is thought to be vulnerable to quantum computing attacks.

A public road map for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography would turn the fear about quantum computing into a well-defined and controlled risk, similar to an engineering project. Edwards believes that this would happen 'pretty much overnight' once a clear plan is in place.
