Quantum Computing Closes Gap to Blockchain Security
The security of blockchain transactions is at risk due to advancements in quantum computing. According to Circle, the theoretical threshold for breaking ECDSA cryptographic signatures has dropped from 2,330 logical qubits in 2017 to 813 logical qubits by August 2026.
This means that it will become easier for hackers to breach digital signature schemes used across the industry. However, Circle emphasizes that this does not mean quantum computers are a threat yet, but rather that the gap between current quantum capability and blockchain defenses is narrowing.
Circle has implemented support for the SLH-DSA post-quantum scheme on its Arc network, which maintains hybrid compatibility with ECDSA. The company also reports a 65% decrease in computational requirements needed to breach digital signature schemes.
