Quantum Computing Fears Weigh on Bitcoin Price, Says Capriole Investments Founder
Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, believes that concerns about quantum computing are already affecting Bitcoin's market value. He estimates that uncertainty over Bitcoin's long-term resistance to quantum-powered cyber threats has reduced its price by nearly 30%. Edwards argues that the market is placing a 'quantum discount' on Bitcoin due to lack of clarity on how and when the network will implement a defense against advances in quantum computing.
Edwards suggests that if the Bitcoin community presents a clear roadmap for addressing this issue, the cryptocurrency could experience a rapid price increase. He believes that removing uncertainty would trigger a reassessment of Bitcoin's valuation. Edwards is not suggesting an immediate existential threat to Bitcoin, but rather caution due to lack of planning.
Quantum computing has raised concerns about public-key cryptography, which secures wallet ownership through private and public keys. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could potentially derive a private key from a publicly visible key, allowing an attacker to gain unauthorized access to funds. However, current quantum hardware is nowhere near capable of performing such attacks against Bitcoin's network at scale.
