Quantum Computing Threat Looms Over Bitcoin
D-Wave CEO Alan Baratz has warned that advanced quantum machines could challenge Bitcoin's proof-of-work security in the future. The company has introduced an experimental quantum proof-of-work concept designed to improve mining efficiency, which uses quantum optimization problems instead of traditional mining calculations.
The proposed approach is estimated to be around 1,000 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin's existing mining model, but remains at a research stage. Baratz noted that current quantum hardware is not an immediate threat, and experts agree that the timeline for when quantum computing becomes a risk for blockchain networks remains uncertain.
Developers are exploring post-quantum cryptography to strengthen digital assets against emerging technologies, and some argue that preparation should continue without creating unnecessary alarm. Bitcoin supporters have said there is no immediate need for a rushed migration to post-quantum systems, suggesting a gradual approach could allow researchers and developers to test solutions while maintaining confidence in existing infrastructure.
