Quantum Leap: US Senators Introduce Bill to Accelerate Pentagon's Quantum Sensing Technology
Two US senators have introduced legislation aimed at accelerating the Pentagon's adoption of quantum sensing technology. The National Quantum Readiness Act would require the Defense Department to identify at least three priority quantum sensor projects within 60 days and set a goal of deploying those systems by September 30, 2028.
The bill also calls for coordination among the Defense Department, Commerce Department, Energy Department, and National Science Foundation to support partnerships with private quantum companies. This legislation does not target cryptocurrencies or require blockchain networks to change their security systems.
However, it comes as governments worldwide prepare for the possibility that powerful quantum computers could eventually challenge some of today's encryption methods. The concern is centered on cryptography, as Bitcoin and other blockchain networks rely on public-key cryptography to authorize transactions and protect user funds.
