Quantum-Resistant Transaction Completes on Bitcoin Mainnet, But Millions Remain Exposed
The Bitcoin network has made a significant step forward in its quest for long-term security with the successful completion of its first quantum-resistant transaction. This achievement, carried out by StarkWare, demonstrates that advanced cryptographic techniques can be integrated at the transaction level without requiring changes to the consensus rules.
The transaction used a novel signature scheme resistant to quantum threats and was executed directly on the Bitcoin network. However, this milestone highlights a remaining risk: approximately 7 million BTC remain vulnerable to future quantum computing attacks due to their public keys having been exposed.
This exposure is largely from early-era addresses and those that have made transactions without using advanced security measures like address reuse avoidance. While most modern wallets use fresh addresses for each transaction, the scale of the exposure underscores the urgency for protocol-level solutions.
