Quantum Risk Looms Over Bitcoin's Security
Fidelity Digital Assets has released a report on the potential risks of quantum computers to Bitcoin's security. The researchers warn that powerful enough quantum machines could use Shor's algorithm to derive private keys from public keys, compromising the entire network.
The current cryptography used by Bitcoin relies on elliptic-curve cryptography, which is vulnerable to attacks by future quantum computers. A proposed system called SHRINCS uses hash-based signatures instead of elliptic-curve cryptography, but this would come at a cost: larger signatures mean more data per transaction, raising fees and slowing down transaction throughput.
Fidelity's researchers noted that the impact might be smaller right now since Bitcoin's mempool is nearly empty. However, they emphasized the need for long-term security planning to ensure the network remains secure in the face of future quantum computing advancements.
