Quantum-Safe Transaction Lands on Mainnet Without Protocol Changes

Cryptography company StarkWare has made significant progress in securing Bitcoin transactions against quantum computer attacks. According to Avihu Levy, a researcher at StarkWare, this proof-of-concept transaction could potentially protect funds from being compromised by powerful quantum computers.

The transaction was executed on the mainnet and confirmed in block 964,199. This achievement is notable as it didn't require any soft fork, new opcode, or network-wide upgrade to Bitcoin.

The security of this transaction comes from hash preimage resistance, which creates a computational puzzle that's resistant to Shor's algorithm. StarkWare used the MARA Foundation's Slipstream service to bypass relay limits and execute the transaction.

While this is considered a significant step forward, it's essential to note that Bitcoin still needs a protocol-level soft fork to integrate a scalable alternative for post-quantum security. The computational costs of this quantum-safe signature scheme are currently too high, costing between $75 and $150 in cloud GPU compute.
