Quantum Threat Looms for Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work Protocol
Bitcoin's security has been called into question by D-Wave CEO Alan Baratz, who warns that advanced quantum machines could eventually challenge the proof-of-work protocol used in Bitcoin mining.
In a recent interview with Yahoo Finance, Baratz stated that 'at some point, quantum computing will break the bitcoin proof-of-work protocol; that's clear.'
Baratz also presented D-Wave's experimental quantum proof-of-work protocol as a possible alternative to traditional mining calculations. This concept uses quantum optimization problems instead of traditional mining calculations and seeks to maintain competition among miners while reducing exposure to future attacks.
The proposed approach is reportedly around 1,000 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin's existing mining model. However, the idea remains at a research stage, and Bitcoin's current security model continues to operate successfully after over a decade of use.
