Quantum Threat Looms: Governments Prepare, Crypto Industry Struggles
The threat of quantum computers to cryptocurrency has been gaining attention in recent years. Despite fears that quantum machines could break widely used cryptography, researchers estimate that they are still several years away from posing a significant risk. However, governments have started planning for the potential impact, with the US budgeting billions of dollars to move federal systems to new post-quantum standards by 2035.
The transition is more complicated for cryptocurrency due to the nature of digital assets and the existing infrastructure. Many old wallets may never be upgraded, and institutional custody systems were built around cryptography that quantum machines are expected to break.
Experts from BitGo, Nethermind, and the cryptography community agree that institutions need a complete record of where vulnerable cryptography is used, including signing systems, hardware, recovery procedures, authentication, and long-lived keys. This 'Cryptographic Bill of Materials' would help organizations prioritize their migration to post-quantum standards.
