Quantum Threat Looms Over Bitcoin as IonQ Unveils Next-Gen Quantum Computer
Rapid advancements in quantum computing technology have brought the threat to Bitcoin's security back into focus. The possibility that powerful quantum computers could break current cryptographic systems has raised concerns about the long-term safety of digital assets.
IonQ, a US-based company, recently introduced its 'Superion 256' quantum computer with a 256-qubit processor. However, the company clarified that this technology is not at a level where it could instantly compromise Bitcoin's security.
A study by IonQ found that breaking the secp256k1 elliptic curve used by Bitcoin would require approximately 19,397 physical qubits in a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The study also stated that such an attack requires a high number of qubits and a stable operating system over a long time.
IonQ emphasizes that their research was not an actual attack on Bitcoin and that no wallets, private keys, networks, or live systems were accessed during the study.
