Quantum Threats Lurk in Plain Sight: Blockchain Security at Risk
Quantum computing poses a significant threat to blockchain security, not just because it can break through traditional cryptography but also due to its potential to compromise private keys directly from public data on-chain. This was highlighted by Christopher Smith, CEO and co-founder of Quantus Network, who explained that an attacker may not need to hack exchanges or wallets in the usual way.
A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could derive private keys from public information, allowing theft without leaving a clear forensic trail of how funds were stolen. This makes it challenging for incident response teams to detect and respond to such attacks, as they would be looking for signs of intrusion rather than cryptographic compromise.
Smith pointed out that early targets might not be the most famous holdings but rather high-value administrative keys and hot-wallet access. He also mentioned that attackers could use plausible deniability to disguise their actions by presenting the incident as an ordinary loss of keys.
The timeline for Q-day, when quantum machines can realistically defeat widely used public-key systems, is still uncertain. Estimates vary from 2028 to the early 2030s, with some experts believing it could happen sooner while others expect a longer wait. Despite this uncertainty, many organizations are already preparing post-quantum signature migrations as they understand that waiting for certainty is not an option.
