Rangers Bolster Defense as Fan Token Clubs Redefine Blockchain Strategies
Rangers FC has bolstered its defense by signing 22-year-old South African defender Olwethu Makhanya from Philadelphia Union for an estimated £3-5 million, with a sell-on clause retained by the MLS side. This transfer is notable not only because of Makhanya's talent but also due to the intersection of sports and blockchain.
Rangers were one of the first European football clubs to launch a fan token through Bitci in July 2021, ahead of many Premier League sides. Meanwhile, Philadelphia Union has taken a different approach with its multi-year partnership with Theta Labs, which focuses on building a mobile app with AI features and includes an AI chatbot called UnionBot.
The two clubs' blockchain strategies reflect the evolving landscape of fan tokens in sports. While launching a token may be easy, sustaining its value is challenging, as seen in Rangers' experience with Bitci. Philadelphia Union's pivot towards Theta Labs represents a second-generation approach, embedding blockchain into the user experience rather than selling speculative assets.
