Rate Limbo Fuels CLO ETF Boom as Investors Seek Safe Havens
Last month's decision by the Federal Reserve to stand pat on interest rates has led to an unexpected surge in demand for collateralized loan obligations (CLOs) within the exchange-traded fund (ETF) market.
Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, believes that CLOs could be the next big push in the ETF industry. He attributes this growing interest to the uncertainty surrounding interest rates.
CLOs are short-term fixed income strategies composed of pools of floating-rate secured loans, designed to offer relative stability and appealing yields across market cycles. The appeal lies in their ability to provide attractive yields without long-term maturity risk, making them an attractive option for investors waiting on the Fed's next move.
Rosenbluth pointed out that Reckoner Capital Management is actively creating new CLO ETFs this year, and this trend is expected to continue as demand remains strong. However, he also emphasized that there are risks associated with CLO tranches, particularly lower-tier tranches (BBB-B), which face heightened default risk and market volatility during economic stress.
