RBI Battles Rupee Weakness as Banks Raise Record $8 Billion
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is intervening in the foreign exchange market to stabilize the rupee, which has been weakening. At the same time, Indian banks are raising billions of dollars from overseas markets through dollar bond sales, with a record $8 billion raised this year.
The RBI's efforts to manage pressure on the rupee include offering cheaper hedging for overseas borrowings through its USD-INR swap facility. This has made dollar funding more attractive for banks, who can raise funds in dollars and then use them to support their operations.
Crypto investors in India are exposed to a greater currency risk than they realize when trading Bitcoin or other US dollar-backed cryptocurrencies. The value of these assets is usually measured in rupees, so when the rupee weakens, the INR value of Bitcoin can rise even if its USD price remains flat.
