Recovered Bitcoin Wallet Worth $4.76 Million Highlights Custody Risk
A British investor, identified as Chris, has recovered a Bitcoin wallet that had been inaccessible for 12 years. The wallet contained 61 BTC, which is now worth around $4.76 million at the current price of $78,064.21 per coin.
The recovery was facilitated by lawyers from CEL Solicitors, who established ownership and returned the assets within months. According to Ryan Sweetnam, financial-litigation director at CEL Solicitors, 'We had to get all the court documents sorted for American courts.'
Chris initially purchased £1,500 worth of Bitcoin in 2011 through early UK exchange Intersango. The account was frozen after the exchange closed in 2014, leaving Chris without access to his funds.
The recovery highlights the importance of custody risk in cryptocurrency investing. While market volatility can result in significant price swings, failed records, counterparties, or recovery plans can render an entire balance unusable.
