Reform's Crypto Donations Spark Calls for Broader Political Funding Restrictions

Concerns over the £72mn in cryptocurrency donations to Reform UK have put Britain's political funding system under scrutiny. The House of Lords will debate tighter restrictions on political donations, including a potential cap on large individual contributions. This move comes after two cryptocurrency billionaires, Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, each donated £36mn to Nigel Farage's party.

The Representation of the People Bill is set to be debated in the House of Lords, with Labour peer Lord Wills expected to raise concerns over the donations. The bill proposes a £100,000 limit on political contributions for British citizens living overseas, which would be backdated to March and potentially bring Delo and Harborne within its scope.

Reform UK has faced criticism from opposition parties and organised labour over the scale of its fundraising. Critics argue that the donations have created an uneven playing field in British politics, with some parties receiving significant funding from wealthy individuals while others rely on smaller contributions from grassroots supporters.
