Regulated Funds Take Over Crypto Rally After Short Sellers Spark Momentum
A recent cryptocurrency rally added around $500 billion in market value over just a few days as Bitcoin surged from approximately $63,500 to nearly $80,000.
The initial push was largely driven by short liquidations, which created a momentum that eventually turned into fresh capital pouring in from regulated investment products.
Crypto investor Tom Lee described the event as a 'course correction' that could potentially lead to a larger advance. In fact, a Glassnode report revealed Aug. 19 saw the largest short-liquidation day since 2019.
As Bitcoin's price moved against shorts, exchanges automatically closed these positions, forcing bearish bets into mandatory buying during an already volatile rally.
This development was followed by significant investment-product inflows, with CoinShares reporting over $2.9 billion of global crypto investment-product inflows in the week to Aug. 20, the largest weekly total of 2026.
