Regulators Set Deadline for Quantum Preparedness, Leaving Bitcoin in Limbo
Hong Kong's banking sector has been given a deadline to prepare for quantum threats by 2030, with regulators rating their readiness at just 2.3 out of 10.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) published a white paper on quantum preparedness and announced plans to support the banking sector's transition through practical guidance and industry engagement.
Bitcoin, however, faces the same threat but has no central authority to mandate its post-quantum transition. Proposals exist for mitigating the risk, such as BIP-360 and BIP-361, but a consensus-driven governance bottleneck remains an obstacle to adoption and security.
