Regulators Unveil Global Framework to Control Cross-Border Stablecoin Transactions
Regulators from major financial hubs around the world are working together to build a 'global stablecoin firewall' that will grant them authority over cross-border transactions using tokens pegged to traditional currencies. This new framework aims to treat stablecoins as payment infrastructure, subjecting them to the same regulations as banks.
The U.S. Treasury is leading the charge with proposed regulations for implementing the illicit-finance provisions of the GENIUS Act, which would make it easier to identify and freeze suspicious transactions involving stablecoins.
In the UK, a two-tier system is being implemented, with 'systemic' issuers subject to direct oversight by the Bank of England and FCA. This will give authorities greater control over large-scale stablecoin transactions.
