The World Trade Organization (WTO) has shed light on the challenges facing stablecoin adoption in international finance. According to Juan Marchetti, director of the trade in services and investment division at the WTO, fragmented regulatory regimes are the main obstacle.

'The constraint is not technology. It is actually regulation and the lack of development of regulatory frameworks,' said Marchetti during a speech in Geneva.

A recent report by the Financial Stability Board found that only 39% (11 out of 28 surveyed jurisdictions) have finalized their stablecoin regulatory frameworks. Stablecoins currently account for just 3% of total international payments, but may improve some of the main friction points of trade finance, including high costs, low speed, limited access, insufficient transparency, and foreign exchange limitations.

The WTO's report highlighted five key areas where stablecoin adoption can have a significant impact. It also noted that developing economies stand to gain most from stablecoin adoption due to their ability to reduce remittance fees. However, these countries often have the least developed regulatory regimes to facilitate adoption.
