Remains: Where Art Meets Blockchain Decay
Kazimir Malevich's concept of the zero point of painting, a black square on a gallery wall, was revisited by artist Rupture in his latest series, Remains. This time, however, it's not just an image but a consequence of the collector's actions.
Remains consists of four hybrid works where a painting and a related ordinal are structurally bound. Each inscription contains exactly 210,000 pixels, the number of blocks mined in a Bitcoin halving epoch. Starting from April 2028, one pixel will die for every block the network mines, causing the image on the blockchain to decay.
The only way to stop this decay is by using a unique alphanumeric code hidden beneath the surface of the physical painting. To retrieve the code, the collector must destroy a meaningful portion of the work and inscribe it as a child of the Ordinal. This act will permanently halt the decay but also wound the painting forever.
Rupture's concept was inspired by his thoughts on permanence in digital mediums. He wanted to turn the idea of permanent storage on its head, embracing impermanence as part of the work. By linking pixels with blocks mined on the Bitcoin network, Rupture created a dynamic and irreversible process that reflects the nature of time itself.
