Republicans' New Crypto Bill Faces Crucial Vote Amid Bipartisan Concerns
Senate Republicans have introduced a new version of the CLARITY Act, a bill that could significantly impact the broader cryptocurrency market. The latest draft of the legislation is 630 pages long and includes several key revisions.
The most notable changes are in the definition of decentralized protocols, which distinguishes between genuinely decentralized systems and non-decentralized finance trading protocols. Participating in a decentralized governance mechanism or incident-response security council does not automatically amount to control, according to the bill.
The revised DeFi language also explicitly focuses on digital-commodity cash and spot markets. Additionally, the bill retains significant protections for software developers and strengthens language concerning credit unions.
The next major test for the legislation comes on September 15, when the Senate is expected to consider cloture on the motion to proceed. With the current text still lacking bipartisan support, Republicans will have to persuade enough Democrats to allow debate to move forward.
