Retail Traders Reel as Popular Stocks Plunge Over 25%
A basket of 50 stocks popular among retail traders has fallen 13% in July alone, marking the steepest monthly decline for the group since 2022. This is according to Bloomberg, which tracks the momentum trade - a strategy that involves buying assets that are already on the rise and hoping they continue to climb.
The situation is even more dire when looking at a separate tracker maintained by Jefferies, which focuses on Russell 1000 companies with high retail ownership. This group has plummeted over 25% since June, affecting traders who were heavily invested in high-beta names like Robinhood Markets and Marvell Technology.
The decline is attributed to the shift away from momentum assets, such as Bitcoin, towards AI-related equities. While no direct connection was made between Bitcoin's decline and the fall of retail stock favorites, the market's appetite for momentum appears to be shifting.
