Retroactive Toxicity: How Crypto Compliance Can Turn Legitimate Funds Into Financial Red Flags

Share

A legitimate user's funds can be turned into financial red flags due to crypto compliance, a phenomenon known as 'retroactive toxicity.'

This occurs when blockchain analytics firms update cluster labels and re-label historical data after a platform is added to a sanctions list.

In 2026, the UK published an updated sanctions list under its Russia-related package, adding Huobi Global S.A., the Panama-based company behind the HTX exchange. The regulator's allegation was that HTX allegedly served as a conduit for funds tied to Russian networks, sending over $1.5 billion into Russia.

HTX denies all of it, claiming the sanctioned legal shell is not the HTX platform its customers use. However, Bybit warned customers that any HTX-linked deposits or withdrawals could trigger additional AML and compliance checks, and advised users to avoid HTX-associated wallets.
