Revolut Clients Caught in Data Breach as Hackers Demand Ransom
Revolut, a UK-based fintech company, has announced that it was breached by hackers who obtained sensitive personal information from nearly 700 clients.
The breach occurred when a hacker used a legitimate government email address to send a fraudulent request for private customer data. Revolut complied with the request and provided sensitive information including passport details, bank account numbers, home addresses, verification pictures, identity cards, and Bitcoin activity records.
The hackers are threatening to release the obtained information publicly unless Revolut pays a ransom. Britain's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is investigating the incident after Revolut reported itself to the watchdog days earlier.
Mark Karpelès, former chief executive of Mt Gox, was among those affected and received an email from Revolut warning him that his data may be at risk.
