Revolut Hacked: Hackers Publish Client Data Demanding 10,000 BTC Ransom
Revolut, a European fintech company, has been targeted by hackers who tricked its staff into handing over customer records. The attackers, calling themselves Revolut Smilik, published the data of high-profile clients on Telegram channels and demanded a ransom of 10,000 Bitcoin, worth more than $782 million.
The hackers claimed they would leak more client data every day until Revolut pays the ransom. The stolen files included passports, verification selfies, account statements, IBANs, names, dates of birth, and home addresses of clients. Among those affected are tennis player Alexander Shevchenko and Gamdom CEO Felix Römer.
Revolut confirmed that an unauthorized party had impersonated a government agency, sending fraudulent requests for information from an email on the agency's real domain with valid technical authentication. The company blocked the address on detection and alerted relevant authorities, law enforcement, data protection regulators, and financial regulators.
