Revolut's EURR Stablecoin Rolls Out Amid ECB Digital Euro Development
Revolut has started rolling out its first euro-backed stablecoin, EURR, to selected customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal. The token is issued by Bridge Building S.A., part of Stripe-owned stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge.
EURR will maintain a value of €1 and initially run on the Ethereum network before expanding to wider European Economic Area markets later this year.
The ECB has strengthened its privacy commitments for a potential digital euro, ensuring that offline transactions remain visible only to the payer and recipient. Banks would retain information required for compliance, but the Eurosystem itself would not be able to identify users making or receiving payments.
Revolut's EURR is developing on separate tracks from the digital euro project, with the central bank currency designed as a direct liability of the central bank. The digital euro remains under development and could support offline payments while banks handle customer-facing services and compliance checks for online transactions.
