Riot Platforms May Free Up $120 Million in BTC as Bitcoin Rally Continues
Riot Platforms entered into an agreement in February 2026 to pledge 3,977 BTC against a $200 million loan from Coinbase. However, as Bitcoin's price fell, the company was required to add another 1,825 BTC to its collateral balance, bringing it to 5,802 BTC.
The situation has now reversed with Bitcoin's recent rally pushing the price above $78,000, making it possible for Riot to release some of the pledged coins. According to CryptoSlate's calculations, between 1,159 and 1,547 BTC could be released, depending on which schedule Coinbase is using.
The release would bring the collateral balance back to its reset level, allowing Riot to free up more assets for deployment elsewhere. This development is significant as it highlights how Bitcoin-backed miner debt can be procyclical, with a falling price making loan balances consume more of a company's treasury.
