Riot Platforms Sells 4,300 BTC to Fuel AI Data Center Expansion
Riot Platforms is selling 4,300 Bitcoin to fund its AI data center expansion. According to the company's latest SEC filing, this move highlights a shift in major Bitcoin miners from accumulating cryptocurrency toward building more predictable, long-term computing businesses.
The strategy comes as Bitcoin mining profitability remains under significant pressure due to increasing electricity expenses and low hashprice. Riot Platforms' mining revenue fell 19.3% in the second quarter as its direct cost to mine one Bitcoin climbed to $49,912.
Riot generated $113.7 million in mining revenue but continues to perform better than the industry average. The company has substantial liquidity with approximately $1.2 billion in liquid assets, including $548.9 million in cash and 11,380 BTC.
The sale of Bitcoin will provide additional capital as Riot accelerates its transition toward AI infrastructure. The company's AI pivot reflects a broader trend in the industry, with major miners like MARA Holdings, Core Scientific, and Bitdeer reducing or liquidating cryptocurrency reserves to finance AI and high-performance computing infrastructure.
