Riot Platforms Sells More Bitcoin to Fund AI Infrastructure Expansion
Riot Platforms has continued its shift away from holding large amounts of Bitcoin (BTC) in its treasury, selling an additional 4,300 BTC during the second quarter of 2026. This brings the company's total sales for the first half of the year to around 9,665 BTC.
The sale leaves Riot with a remaining stack of 11,380 BTC as of June 30, down from roughly 15,680 BTC at the start of the quarter. Of this remaining amount, 5,821 BTC is pledged as collateral against existing loans.
Riot's decision to sell its BTC holdings is part of its pivot towards artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing infrastructure. The company has leased a 191-megawatt facility from Anthropic for 20 years, which is projected to generate around $9.1 billion in revenue through 2048.
This trend is not unique to Riot, as other mining companies such as Marathon have also sold significant amounts of BTC during the first half of 2026, with Marathon selling approximately 23,093 BTC for around $1.6 billion at an average price of $70,631.
