Riot Secures $9.1 Billion Data Center Deal, Signaling Shift to AI Infrastructure
Riot Platforms has signed a massive data-center lease for its Rockdale campus in Texas, marking a significant shift in the Bitcoin mining industry. The 20-year agreement is expected to generate $9.1 billion in contracted revenue over its initial term and can be extended further.
The deal highlights how existing mining infrastructure can be repositioned for AI workloads, demonstrating that the commercial story surrounding Bitcoin mining is changing. Mining businesses are no longer just evaluated on their ability to produce Bitcoin but also on access to electricity, land, cooling systems, network connectivity, and large-scale digital infrastructure.
The 191-megawatt lease will serve as a build-to-suit Tier 3 facility for an AI customer, with initial capacity expected to come online before the full deployment is completed. The agreement shows that operators with developed power infrastructure can compete for AI and high-performance computing demand without abandoning their digital-asset roots.
