Ripple CTO Challenges Replication of Bitcoin Network Effect
Ripple Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz has weighed in on the debate surrounding Bitcoin's replicability, stating that copying the code doesn't replicate the network.
The discussion began at Binance Blockchain Week, where Binance founder Changpeng Zhao and Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff exchanged views on gold-backed tokens and their value compared to Bitcoin.
Schiff argued that physical gold carries practical utility due to its scarcity and industrial demand, while Bitcoin's value lies in faith rather than any tangible use. However, Zhao countered that dividing or verifying gold requires specialized tools, whereas Bitcoin can be instantly transferred and verified through the blockchain.
Schwartz questioned the premise of replicating Bitcoin by asking how a new version could be both identical to the original and still considered 'new.' He emphasized that even if another chain mimics Bitcoin's code, it cannot replicate the network of users, miners, institutions, and real-time validation that gives Bitcoin its identity.
