Ripple CTO Challenges Replication, Says Network Effect Can't Be Copied
Ripple CTO David Schwartz has weighed in on the debate about whether Bitcoin can be replicated, arguing that copying its code doesn't replicate the network. This comes after a heated exchange between Binance founder Changpeng Zhao and Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff at Binance Blockchain Week.
Schiff claimed gold-backed tokens have value due to their physical utility, representing ownership of scarce commodities used across industries. He stated that Bitcoin's worth stems from faith alone, with no practical use. Zhao countered by highlighting the difficulties in dividing or verifying physical gold without specialized tools, whereas Bitcoin can be transferred and verified instantly through its blockchain.
Schwartz then asked a pivotal question: how can a new Bitcoin replicate exactly the same as the original? His point echoed Zhao's argument about verifiability. The network effect cannot be replicated, Schwartz emphasized, mirroring how counterfeit gold doesn't reduce real gold's value when proper verification exists.
