Ripple Prepares XRP Ledger for Quantum Computing Threat
Ripple is preparing its XRP Ledger for potential vulnerabilities in cryptography due to emerging quantum computing capabilities.
Ayo Akinyele, senior director of engineering at Ripple, stated that they aim to update the $XRP Ledger before a 'Q-Day' emerges, when sufficiently powerful quantum computers could potentially break some mathematical protections used by blockchains and banks today.
Ripple has outlined a four-stage plan for updating the XRP Ledger: assessing vulnerabilities, testing alternative cryptography, implementing both old and new security measures simultaneously, and eventually migrating to quantum-resistant alternatives.
The company is treating this as an infrastructure project rather than a last-minute software patch, acknowledging that 'the financial system was not built with quantum computing in mind.'
