Ripple Prepares XRP Ledger for Quantum Threats with Four-Stage Upgrade
Ripple, the global cross-border payment network, has announced a four-stage plan to prepare the XRP Ledger (XRPL) for potential security threats from quantum computers. The upgrade will be led by Ayo Akinyele, Senior Director of Engineering, and will involve testing new security tools and gradually upgrading the network.
The concern is that powerful quantum computers could break the elliptic curve cryptography used by many blockchain networks, including Bitcoin. Ripple's plan aims to address this risk before it becomes a reality.
The four-phase upgrade plan includes an emergency system for sudden threats, testing of new security algorithms, parallel deployment on Devnet and Testnet, and finally, a mainnet upgrade targeted for 2028.
XRPL already has key features that will aid the transition to post-quantum security, such as key rotation and seed-based key generation. Ripple emphasizes its focus on preserving XRPL's strengths while working towards a post-quantum crypto transition.
