Ripple is taking steps to ensure its XRP Ledger (XRPL) remains secure against potential threats from quantum computers. The company has announced a four-stage upgrade plan, which will test new security tools and gradually upgrade the network over the next few years.

The plan, led by Ayo Akinyele, Senior Director of Engineering, aims to protect XRP users and developers in case powerful quantum computers become capable of breaking current cryptography used by many blockchain networks, including Bitcoin. Ripple is working with its applied cryptography team to implement new security methods before they are needed.

The four stages include an emergency plan, testing new algorithms, parallel deployment on testnets, and a mainnet upgrade. The company has already tested NIST-recommended ML-DSA on AlphaNet in H1 2026, and plans to run quantum-safe and existing cryptography side by side on Devnet and Testnet during H2 2026.

Ripple's XRP Ledger already has features that could make a future move to post-quantum security easier. The network supports key rotation and seed-based key generation, which can help users create new key material during a future security upgrade.
